The brimstone is widely believed to be the origin of the word "butterfly" — its bright sulphur-yellow wings were described as "butter-coloured" in early English. It is also one of the longest-lived European butterflies, surviving as an adult for up to eleven months, overwintering among ivy leaves whose colour its wing shape mimics almost perfectly.
The brimstone's pure butter-yellow colour deserves a warm, sunny palette — use a lemon-to-primrose gradient, deeper at the wing centre and paling to cream at the edges. The distinctive raised vein pattern can be suggested with fine pale yellow-green lines. Male wings are richer yellow; female wings are paler, tending toward a soft white-green.
