The red admiral is a migrant butterfly that travels from Southern Europe and North Africa to northern Europe each spring. Its striking black wings with orange-red bands and white spots made it a popular subject for Victorian naturalists — its distinctive pattern has appeared in natural history illustrations since the 17th century.
Start with the deep red-orange bands that cross the black wings — burnt orange or cadmium red work beautifully here. Leave the white spots as clean paper. The large black wing areas benefit from a deep blue-black shading to suggest the velvety wing texture that gives this butterfly its jewel-like appearance.
