This graceful Swallowtail Butterfly Simple Outline for Kids captures the elegant silhouette of one of the world's most distinctive butterfly families — the flowing tail extensions, broad wing panels, and graceful form simplified into a clean outline perfect for young colorists. Part of our free butterfly coloring pages collection.
Swallowtail butterflies are found on every continent except Antarctica and include some of the largest butterfly species on Earth. The distinctive tail extensions — which mimic the forked tails of swallows in flight — are thought to distract predators away from the butterfly's vulnerable body toward a more expendable wing tip.
Swallowtails often feature yellow or pale cream panels with bold black borders and veins. Fill the large pale panels first in a warm cream or sunshine yellow, then carefully add the contrasting black borders. The small blue and rust-orange accent spots near the tail extensions are wonderful details to add last.
