Pegasus — The Winged Horse of Greek Mythology

In Greek mythology, Pegasus was born from the blood of the slain Gorgon Medusa, springing fully formed and immediately taking flight. He was captured by the hero Bellerophon with a golden bridle given by the goddess Athena, and together they rode against the fearsome Chimera. Eventually Zeus placed Pegasus among the stars as the constellation that still bears his name.

But the enduring appeal of Pegasus reaches far beyond that single myth. A horse — already the most powerful and beautiful animal domesticated by humanity — given the freedom of the sky: there is no more perfect image of noble, unbound power. Pegasus has remained a symbol of inspiration, creative freedom and the aspiration to rise above limitations for three thousand years. Every winged horse drawn since is, in some sense, an echo of that original image.

What Is in the Pegasus Collection

Across 59 pages you will find Pegasus in full gallop through storm clouds, landing on a mountaintop, rising from a moonlit lake, in elegant resting poses that show every feather, and in sweeping flight compositions that fill the whole page with wings and wind. Some pages feature a single majestic horse; others include mythological settings, riders and companions.

How to Color Pegasus Pages

The classic Pegasus is pure white — and pure white on paper means using the background itself as the lightest tone, building up with the palest blues, lavenders and warm creams in the shadows and wing depths. A blue or violet sky behind white wings creates the most dramatic contrast. Alternatively, go mythological: a midnight-black Pegasus with electric blue or silver wings is just as iconic, and a rose-gold or moonbeam-silver Pegasus has a more magical, fantasy quality.

  • White Pegasus trick — use a very pale blue or lavender for shadow areas only, leaving the rest white, so the horse reads as luminously white rather than blank.
  • Deep sky for contrast — a rich midnight blue or violet sky makes white wings glow against it.
  • Wing gradient — the wing base can be slightly warmer (cream, soft gold) while the feather tips lighten to near-white, suggesting light catching the tips in flight.
  • Gold accents — a gold bridle, gold-tipped hooves or a golden mane give the mythological feel.
